The Statler, originally opened in 1956, was a landmark hotel and convention center that helped define mid-century Dallas. Designed by architect William Tabler, the building featured innovative elements for its time, cantilevered floor slabs, a glass and aluminum curtain wall, exposed HVAC systems, elevator music, and even a rooftop heliport. With 1,001 rooms, The Statler quickly became a hub for major events and a destination for high-profile guests, including the Jackson Five and Tina Turner. After sitting vacant since 2001, the building has been fully restored and reimagined as a large-scale historic adaptive reuse project. It now includes 159 Curio by Hilton hotel rooms, 219 luxury multi-family units, two rooftop pools, three restaurants, a speakeasy, a barbershop, internal parking, and ground-floor retail. The redevelopment preserves what is widely considered the best example of mid-century architecture in the region while making it functional for modern use. Next door, the Old Dallas Central Library has been converted into the headquarters for The Dallas Morning News. Together, these two buildings have helped reenergize a long-neglected stretch of downtown. The project strengthens connections between the Central Business District, Arts District, Farmers Market, and Deep Ellum, reinforcing the urban fabric with active, mixed-use space. |
